The book chronicles the darkest years of his experiences with the onset of the Cultural Revolution and his eventual flight to France in search of the liberties he was denied at home. In one of the best sections of this book, the narrator contrasts his desire not to remember with his Jewish lover’s compulsion to dwell in individual and collective memory–a conflict between two different approaches to a painful past. I did, however, get a sense of the fear and oppression of the Chinese under communism, which I link to the memiors I’ve read of Russian communist oppression, which I loved and which truely were fabulous.
